D of E = people coming into Millets to either buy good quality stuff, or buy cheap crap no matter how much you say thats not going to be good enough.

Geography and Geology can also lead to things to do with mining, oil industry, earthquakes, volcanoes and other (well-paying ?) job opportunities.

With ecology being so important to companies these days, there should be lots of opportunities if your geography includes some eco stuff too.

I'm interested in this thread because Scoosh jnr is starting his (Scottish) Highers and is considering geography as a degree option too .. in a couple of years' time.

FWIW, Hairy Jock's good lady is a geographer - and he's an ecosomething

Some of the stuff Millets sell is fine for D of E. However, Millets is also full of cheap crap/tat thats at a stupid price(i know the profit % for some of the stuff) and its stupid why people are buying these things.
Millets was once selling this light you put on your keys, and if you dropped your keys the light would flash. No matter how many times we dropped it, it wouldnt flash. To get it to flash we had to press it(pretty hard aswell)
When the sales are on though, Millets can be pretty good for value.
And at the moment, you can take any tent you have into Millets, and get 20% off a new tent. The old tents go to other countries to help the people there.
Anyway, back on topic.........

Not sure how many opportunities are actually available in eco stuff. I had quite a few friends that did Environmental Science and although there were some fabulous jobs out there half of the north of England will have been applying for them. An Ecologist I know lost her job recently and it did seem a massive blow, as she was quite pessimistic about ever finding another one in that line of work. I think this is true of most subjects, many people do tend to exaggerate the opportunities.

The annoying thing is geography isnt about finding your way and knowing how to get from one place to another.
You do work on land stuff, like Glaciers, rivers, the coasts, volcanos/earthquakes.
And even though they had been shown 6 figure grid references since about year 7, still didnt understand it:wacko:

There will be more jobs in this field, there will have to be sooner or later. The problem is that conventional industry and governments are still doing their best to ignore these problems for short-term reasons... in any case, an undergraduate degree won't necessarily get you a job, not these days, and certainly won't make you a specialist.

Military GIS could be an interesting career. Geography at uni combined with involvement in the OTC would be a good stepping stone.

If you want to work with NERC , you need to get at least a 2:1 (as I discovered having spent most of my final year awake only during the hours of darkness). I still dream vaguely of working for British Antarctic Survey but I don't think it will happen unless I do another degree. And if I did that it would be in chemistry.

Hooray for making all the wrong choices 12 years ago.

Not read everything, but the advice I was given was to do a degree you'd enjoy, as you can end up doing anything anyway.

I wouldn't look down at anyone with a Geography degree...all the "environmental scientists", at my UNI, which I guess is similar, always seem to be outside and stuff which looks fun...where as I'm stuck in a smelly, stinky computer room programming java

I don't think it is general ignorance, merely overestimating the value and applications of GCSE to studying at higher levels. Getting an A or B at a subject in GCSE doesn't say a great deal at all about your abilities either way when it comes to A-level or higher.

No... please, not more talk of DofE, it is torture listening to other people talking about it!

I didn't even do GCSE geography.

Thanks for the advise all...there is some really good stuff here (ilovebikes...where you going to study?)

Joe...your classmates sound special....I teach kids map reading who are like 13 and they all grasp it first time nooo problem.

:birthday:

Good thoughts about the eco stuff. Not so sure about mining, oil (seems a bit morally corrupt to go into this industry). Earthquakes and volcanoes are interesting....but difficult to imagine jobs based around them (especially in the UK)
