Trust me it's not. It's all movies sports porn and you don't have to pay for box office boxing matches. It's very illegal.

I have to wonder why you're posting this on an open forum and don't seem to be condemning it.

Been there before with the set top boxes for pay per view TV, don`t last long before they get blocked! Which is why I`m waiting to see how all these Android boxes will do in a couple of months time, can be had online or you can download the app and run it in on your phone/pc/tablet . I gave it a swirl and you can stream mostly anything at all. So they work but time will tell.

This thread just proves that some people see no issue with supporting criminal activity. IMO, this is no better than buying a stolen bike.

Smokeysmoois right - it's theft rather than fraud. The old s.16 offence under the Theft Act has been abolished. The Fraud Act offences are now slightly different in their construction.

Is it not 'copyright infringement'? Surely 'theft' is defined as "appropriating property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it". In this case there is no deprivation of the media as Sky/Virgin still have 'hard copy'.

Either way it is still wrong.

S11 fraud act 2006 Obtain Services Dishonesty, that's what I reckon would be crimed and then charged with. Got to say the odds of being caught are fairly slim though.

It's entirely different to buying a stolen bike. There's no deprivation caused by piracy. It is like making a copy/knock-off version of your bike, and selling them.

For what it is worth, I had my own business (Photography), and was constantly subjected to having work illegally used and copied. I can also tell you what the polices opinion on this being "fraud" is. The discussion usually goes, "thanks for telling us, but it's a civil matter." Which is why you see so many piracy cases brought to courts by companies, rather than by the CPS.

It is not in the public interest, or worth the Polices time, to investigate and prosecute these offences on small levels. The guy making £30k+ per year selling them, may be a worthy target, the guy buying it is worthless to them.

Grouping "piracy" into "criminal activity", is similar to saying condoning changing to clipless pedals, on a road bike (with no pedal reflectors (contravening construction and use act)) is criminal.

A lot of things are copyright infringement, in fact, I bet most people on here are committing copyright infringement while saying they don't.

  • Buying a CD and copying it into your iTunes
  • Making a back up of your OWN PC that has an iTunes library on it
  • Making a copy of music on your iPod via iTunes
All of these are illegal to do, yet I'm sure if you own an iPod, you put music on it from iTunes. Or have backed up a music collection in the past?

Edit:
I am in no way condoning piracy, but piracy, and copyright infringement issues are not black & white, or straight forward.

This is not copyright infringement - it is fraud. Plain and simple.

And copyright infringement is not some 'victimless' crime either. Stop making excuses and being an apologist for criminal behaviour.

Selling the box is not fraud, purchasing the box is not fraud.

If the box is used to watch any free-to-air channels, no offence has been committed.

Do you have an MP3 player? Does it have music on that was downloaded elsewhere, so you now have 2 copies? 1 on PC, 1 on the MP3 player? If so, I hope you stop this criminal behaviour, and delete it at the earliest opportunity.

I am not condoning using services that have not been paid for, but I would be pretty annoyed if the police wasted time prosecuting. When they apparently don't have the time to keep roads safe.

I wouldn't support that criminal behaviour and lifestyle as I'm pretty sure it won't be declared to the taxman etc.

As a side note I thought it was legal to put tunes onto an iPod as long as you owned the CD? I'm sure none of us are perfect and do break the occasional rule. Not sure though how we decide which ones are OK and which ones aren't?

It was, but the change in law to allow personal backups and copies to other media was challenged and successfully overturned. It is now illegal to do so, without permission of the copyright holder.
