This thread was prompted by a discussion at work... when I jokingly suggested giving a colleague a lift home I used one of the above phrases and got met with blank faces...

It I presume like so many things will be geographical. On my ride today I asked the lady in the cafe for a sausage and egg batch to which she replied "you mean a bap"

Baps to me are something totally different!!!

I think in some places they would also be called a balm or a roll.

Backie. One of you would stand and pedal, the other would sit on the saddle with legs dangling (or trying to stand on the bolts of the rear wheel)!

Then there was the way where you'd have one sitting on the crossbar between the arms of the rider. Did that have a different name?

We did then get on to the Roll/cob/batch/balm cake debate by default
