oooooooo challenge time. I would like to see some of these geared bike riders on a fixie. I bet they would beat their own top average speed using the same crank/cassette gear ratio. Real men ride fixies.

They come to a hill and it's "oooo a little incline, better make it nice and easy on my poor old legs boohoo, I know I'll change gear", for the fixed gear rider it is just a case of "Puff, pant, puff, pant, go on ya b@stard you can do it". I know who feels the achievement the most at the top of the hill.. Fixed gear all the way. xxxx.

100% agree with you there,most geared bike riders are rubbish on hills,I was on a charity ride the weekend
before last and had just started to ride up Cragg Vale (it's the longest continual gradient in the UK so says
the sign at the bottom) when a guy half my age and probably a good 3 stone lighter came scooting past
me in his king of the mountains top and his top of the range Boardman geared bike, 2/3 of the way up
and I catch him up (not that I'd been trying to) He's out of his saddle pumping along in his bottom gear
when I came sailing past sat down on my 30 year old steel framed fixie, By the time I got to the top
of Blackstone Edge I looked round and he wasn't even in sight and you can see for a good mile back
down the road,King of the mountains yeah right

I did the first 150 miles on the freewheel and then flipped over to the fixed side just to see what all the fuss was about - fully expecting to flip back after another 100 miles or so - but it never happened. 2,000 miles later I can't imagine switching back. Riding a freewheel is OK for a slow bimble to the shops but for a proper ride fixed is much more fun.
