Used Garmin etrex series? Can be used as a basic bike computer for recording speed, distance, average etc as well as a variety of other functions. Battery life about 25 hours with AAs, none of your rechargeable nonsense. Can change batteries mid ride, keeps its trip memory if the batteries die. No faffing with setting up for different wheel sizes. Main advantage, as well as its drawback, is its small size if you are going to use the screen a lot for map reading. It's more set up for walkers in that respect, but I have an etrex 20 which works well for me. There's no need to use a phone app either, which is a huge advantage as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks bud🙏🏻

I've seen a few adverts for Coospo fully functional GPS units. £90..

Interesting thread.

I was pondering today if a simple GPS logger exists. I would like to leave my smartphone behind sometimes when out walking particularly.
I do however like to collect a GPS track of where i have been etc

My bike Garmin doesn't really cut it because when lobbed in a bag or pocket the buttons are easily inadvertently pressed.

I was hoping to find a box basically with a guarded on off switch and decent battery that essentially creates a GPS track.

A few years ago, I asked myself that question and IIRC I found a few such products but I never bought one. A quick Google throes up "Marran" as a leading brand (or one who has invested a lot in appearing at the top of Google lists)

If I had a problem with constantly being disturbed by teh mobile

but wanted to track my walk/ride

I would disable mobile data - thus blocking WhatsApp and all that
and set the phone to silent

but leave the tracker running using GPS
I have accidentally done this a few times and Strava has gathered its data and then sent it when I got back home and into wifi coverage again

or even use an old phone with no Sim card in it maybe (or take the Sim card out but that seems excessive

Any GPS based fitness tracker watch will do that. Or your Garmin might have a lock function which locks screen and buttons during activity.
My edge explore 2 can lock the touch screen if you hold the power button then select that option
