Change the bars to carbon one's, that way you can see, feel and sometimes even hear the bling you have upgraded to.

Must admit fitting compact bars to my bike made a difference in average speed when combined with pedalling harder.

My "upgrades" to my Defy 1 were as follows.
Pedals - there weren't any so I thought this was a good place to start.
Tyres - but only after I'd got my money's worth out of the one that were on there and the rear began to bulge!
Brake calipers - not strictly necessary but the Tektro ones that came on the bike weren't the best and I wanted then to match the rest of the groupset.
And that's it. I bought the bike because I liked it so I've no desire to keep throwing money at it for the sake of it.
