If DeNiro looks scared ****less because he probably was. He wasn't actually driving, . To make it look like Robert De Niro and Natascha McElhone were actually driving during the car chase, right-hand-drive cars were used, with the passenger side made to mirror the real controls. Formula One driver Jean-Pierre Jarier, and high-performance drivers Jean-Claude Lagniez and Michel Neugarten were the drivers. All on the streets of Paris.A total of 80 automobiles were destroyed during filming. Apparently the French are very accommodating when it comes to these things.

The chase with the most number of cars used up until it's release and for some time after was the scene towards the end of The Blues Brothers. 500 cars were used.

I think it was proved to be a fake but there's a great video (maybe circa 2017) of a cyclist on a US Freeway being chased by the cops. Typically I cant fin it just now.

Edit its 2016 and mentioned on this video site I probably have to sign up to see it though.

If you ever have to outrun the police in a vehicle chase, forget about using a car, or motorcycle or scooter. Use a bicycle, as this suspect somewhere in America did. It looks like he made it, too.

Also enjoyed Ronin. I suspect it's one of several DVDs i imported from Canada, back when UK availability was v poor. Not sure i have any way to play those films any longer!

That said, whomever decided to let the V8s dominate the musical score, for the duration of the chase deserved an Academy Award that year
