Just two examples, cycling related: the derailleur, hence the French name and world famous: Tour de France.
They nicked the idea for the guillotine though.

Fifteen years ago, I was doing some structural house surveys on a HMG contract. Near Southend, I spent a few hours with a widower from Yorkshire, aged 86, who had macular degeneration, and he started talking about his wartime experiences. Having fought in North Africa and Italy, he found himself leading a six man patrol on a sunken lane in Normandy when they turned a corner. "I remember thinking...that Tiger tank shouldn't be here....." as the gun turret swivelled round to point at them. All the rest of his men were killed instantly, but he came round in a field hospital with a medic leaning over him, telling him that he was really badly wounded and was about to go into surgery. The surgeon said that he really should try and think of something positive to increase his chances of survival.

"I'd like to see Yorkshire win the county cricket championship..."

....to which the surgeon replied, with pity in his voice, in his broad Lancashire accent....

"For God's sake man, don't hope for the impossible."

Joseph Bramah of Yorkshire patented the first practical water closet in England in 1778.

And where would we be without the manhole cover, invented by Thomas Crapper, promoter of sanitary plumbing and supplier to royalty.

as far as I understand it , and with no real academic study , my ancestors were Ancient Brittons ,
Celts maybe , , I think they battled with the Jutes , Anglo Saxons and such , but no links with Yorkshire ,
I must apologise for my earlier criticism of Yorkshire.

I admit to being unfairly biased because my only visits to Yorkshire in recent years have been to Barnsley.
Barnsley is where we keep our bins...

Incidentally, there was a piece on Look North the other day - apparently the vast majority of the skaters of all the nationalities competing in the Winter Olympics used skate blades made in Sheffield.

Roadhump

Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted
I was going to say the road to Lancashire, but someone beat me to it, so I'll go for the house in the middle of the M62, which is on the road to Lancashire as it happens....
