I got a leaflet at Critical Mass from a nice girl who I had a chat with. She was trying to convince me, but I'm not really a 'green' person so didn't care for the cause.

It really makes me chuckle when 'green' demonstrators turn up to rallies on bicycles.

Most of their bikes are manufactured and constructed in the Far East. They are from foundries and engineering works that emit more toxics than car factories in Europe.
The power for the bike factories is generated at Coal fired stations which do not have particulate filtering.
The emissions of the shipping methods to get those bikes to Europe are probably the worst of any surface transportation, ie Diesel ships.

If they REALLY cared for the environment, they would have got there on locally made reed and hessian sandals ;):laugh:

i disagree, whenever i see hippies they are on old battered road bikes , probably British made or old raleigh ladies bikes etc, always old and steel. Its the scallies and scrotes that are always on the far east made rubbish.

If their bikes are over ten years old, they should take them for the £20 trade in scheme.

Good to see they have allied themselves to the emancipation movement

Climate Rush is inspired by the actions of the Suffragettes 100 years ago, who showed that peaceful civil disobedience could inspire positive change. We are a diverse group of women and men who are determined to raise awareness of the biggest threat facing humanity today - that of Climate Change

Bunch of soap dodging hippie idealists ;)

i cant quite make it out, looks a bit alloy mtb but not ful sus so could be anything, the one in the background is even harder to make out. Still they mean well and buying a far east made bike probably has less of a crbon footprint than a car wherever it is made would ever have in its lifetime.

What they should do is dump themselves outside one of the 250 coal fired power stations in China.

This article, from a while ago, concentrates on the CO2 emissions of said stations, but what the public are not told is these stations do not have particulate filtering.
The p10 and p5 ( 5 - 10 micrometer ) particles get up into the upper stratosphere and reflect the sunshine back into space.

A fine balance between CO2 'greenhouse' and p10 reflection exists whereby any inbalance can tip the climate either way.

Dust cloud emissions following Tambora, Krakatua and Mt St Helens upset the balance on the reflective side. 1970s emissions control of the N American car fleet cleaned up the particulates but increased the CO2, resulting in a warming of the northern hemisphere.

Reducing BOTH CO2 AND particulates is the answer. The Chinese don't seem to be interested in either.

And yet again, the upshot is that those inconvenienced will have only seen "those bloody cyclists" rather than "those climate change protestors".

Out of all the reasons why I dislike the climate change lobby, this as a personal gripe is the worst. They are attempting to hijack cycling to further their political cause.

Cycle to commute, cycle for fun, but don't cycle to 'save the planet' ;)
