Cos they are nobbers.

There are a group of cyclists around Greenwich who seem to think the whole pedestrian area in front of the tunnel entrance is fair game and the fact that the one way aspect of King William Walk doesn't apply to them cos otherwise they'd have to cycle oooh 200 yards further around the one way system.

It is so dangerous down there, it's untrue... Frightens me to death when you have unsuspecting parents with little kiddies toddling about, when there's a phalanx of said nobbers hurtling down on the wrong side in the opposite direction

Someone is going to get seriously hurt in there one day. If you have happen to pull someone up for cycling through it you can bet your mortgage on them getting really shirty.

I had someone shake my hand the other day for being "the only one who doesn't ride through". I get thanked a lot, especially by women with toddlers.

Is it really that hard to ignore the "NO CYCLING" signs up all over the place?

I've not been in it for ages. It used to be that if you cycled through it the guy in the lift would refuse to let you in and you'd have to carry your bike up the stairs. I imagine there's no guy in the lift anymore.

I walk it but I have no problem with considerate riding, same as for the pavement. Road cleats make a horrible noise down there and I'd rather they pootled the trip. I dislike rushy-bargy riders though but I guess it's better that they're on the bike rather than driving on the road.

The lift refusal for riders thing was certainly in operation when I was a youngster but it didn't seem to be enforced over the last 20 or so years. Now, of course, they're automatic lifts and they've removed the chicanes.

I've seen it enforced within the last 20 years but the pic Ian keeps posting is the last time I was down there I think and I can't even remember if there was a guy in the lift that day.

No, there isn't... They used to ban you from the lift and make you take the stairs if you'd ridden through (I take the stairs anyway to be honest, having walked through).

They put barriers down there at one point that you had to work your way around, but I'm guessing they were difficult for wheelchair users to negotiate so they got removed.

They should put a couple of sliding gates in with push button operation, with the button mounted at a suitable height for a wheelchair user or pedestrian, but too low for a mounted cyclist to operate.

I would ride through if it was empty but I would certainly get off or stop around pedestrians.
