Was riding along here:

Doing about 20mph, approaching the side road, where there was a car on the opposite side of the road waiting to turn into. I thought she was waiting for me to pass before turning, as there was no traffic in front of me, but it turned out she was completely oblivious to me and made the turn when I was just several metres from her. One of those moments where you just think "crap, there's no way out of this". I shouted in vain but ended up slamming into her with my shoulder and broke my collar bone. She was very apologetic and admitted full responsibilty.

Luckily there was a PCSO and an ambulance nearby who came and dealt with everything. My bike seems ok apart from the handlebars being twisted. There's no visible damage to the forks, but I guess I should get them looked at.

Sorry to hear that mate. Hope you recover quickly and are able to ride again.

Just shows you no matter how careful you are it doesn't stop accidents, there are always idiots out there who don't use their bloody eyes! :cursing:

Ouch.
My bike seems ok apart from the zz. There's no visible damage to the forks, but I guess I should get them looked at.
Need new bike. Make a note of every tiny crack and chip, insurance will usually pay out for a new bike up to a certain value because it isn't worth their time disputing lots of little damages.

Need new body...

Keep a record of every little cost associated with your injury. Things like transport to hospital/work, time off work, drugs and therapy, childcare, anything you can think of really. Also keep a log of how your injuries are healing and do not settle anything straight away as there could be longer term damage you aren't aware of right now that could cause extra costs later.

I was cycling down that very road on Saturday for the first time - I think I'll make it the only time. Look after yourself - it'll be frustrating but you have to rest up for a while.

That's horrid. Like others have said, take time with a proper recovery. That's VERY important.

All the best and God bless

Thanks all. Yeah, I'll definitely be taking it easy over the next few weeks. My job is a desk-based one, so it'll just mean having to type with one hand for a while.

what are forks made of?

Carbon = replace without question.

Can your bike LBS check over and certify the frame as safe?

Injuries: it can be weeks before all injuries fully manifest, go to your doctor now and make them aware of all bumps, scrapes, twists etc

if you need physio, go to a specialist sports physio and get your solicitor to claim.

Don't be shy about claiming

I've given my carbon forks at least one serious impact that bent the front wheel over and they were fine, LBS were fairly sure and they're still good as gold 18 months on, so not 'without question', not unless someone else pays anyway

I hate that accident, eye contact is helpful if you manage it but it's a horrible feeling when they've waited almost to the last minute and then decide they will go after all

and they'll come away from it all with a sorry and a minor claim on their insurance
