Hey all.

I'm going to paint my iron gates. Is there any metal paint better than hammerite? Should I brush or spray paint? I do like hammered black but it's aerosol only.

Any inspirations?

hammerite is the best.

hammered is on the hammerite as non spray

avoid the spray for gates. easy to overspray and get runs as you try to get coverage

Rustoleum they do brush or spray. I think they are better than hammerite. They also flexis and don't brittle.

I'd give it a coat of red oxide primer first and then use whatever top coat you like. Just give it at least a few days to dry properly before putting on the top coat as it tends to be slow-drying but I've found it excellent for keeping rust at bay.

I consider modern day Hammerite over-priced and over-rated.

Hammerite changed their formula in response to EU rules on volatiles, the current offering isn't very good. I'd recommend these two, remembering to get the preparation right and use an appropriate primer -

I've bought Leyland trade black. I'm under the impression it can go straight on with no primer as long as the steel is in decent condition?

I recently sprayed a bike frame in Rustoleum hammered silver, then hung it up to cure in the conservatory for a couple of weeks. It looks like a pro job, and is harder than a Ross Kemp documentary.

You've given me an idea for the dolmite with its softest paint in the world.

Aye, remove all loose rust flakes with a wire brush and you'll be fine.

As a rule of thumb, always buy trade paint. Most times it bears no comparison with regular retail paint.

I've got a 2011 Dolomite and I have to say the finish is impeccable. That said, I once locked it up next to a Kinesis Race light T2 (year U/K) and the frames were identical in every detail (the forks differed though) so its possible the frames and paint have different origins over the years.

Kinesis also make Felt's frames, so my two road bikes are distant cousins.
