I know of some Land Rover people who have installed second hand commercial stainless steel dishwashers in their garages, plumbed into a barrel of degreaser. The washer just circulates the degreaser from/to the barrel via a filter and it saves having bits of engine or gearbox in the kitchen.

I do tend to soak stubborn pans and plates a while first or give them a good scouring in the sink to remove egg yolk, cereal and anything else that sets like concrete before loading the machine.

Yup, dishwashers are marvellous but there are still some things they can't do. Don't believe those adverts that bang on about "enzymes" that magically lift bits of food off plates. I find porridge and egg are the worst culprits - if you put a dish in with bits of porridge or egg on it, it comes out baked on hard like enamel.

I also removed all food still on the plates (I can't believe some people still think their dishwasher is a waste disposal machine!) by scraping off into the food waste bin. That has ensured that nothing comes out with food still on it, nor food being reprocessed back onto the plates.

+1 to this too. But then we also have a waste disposal unit so it's easy to scrape leftovers into that.

My parents produce a lot of washing up but refuse to have a dishwasher. They remember the ones of old that never worked, used loads of water and electricity and only produced warm wet plates with food still on them and Dad reckons they are no better and washing up gives Mum something to do. Mum might disagree on that point.

I think you have to be some kind of priggish masochist to choose not to have a dishwasher. There's no sense in it.

We have one, but only use it when it we host a dinner.

Mrs MM feels much happier hand-washing as she uses the same items several times a day so waiting for the machine to fill up to run at night isn't practical.

Get one we did a couple of years ago.Best thing for us blokes since sliced bread.But i still do the pans by hand.
