Latex gloves, great for keeping your hands clean when changing after a fart.

I apologise, but that's how I just read your post...

What exactly can you repair on the road with zip ties? I'm struggling to think of anything.

They worked great when my panniers decided to disintegrate and take the rack out with them. They managed to secure the loosened upper rack mount, and repair the large rips in my panniers.

I often refer to my bikes as baby. ;)
ahh - my reference is http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/baby-wipes.123979/
still don't get it

Bought a roll of tearable tape - sold as tailoring tape - for an emergency repair when the bracket for my front light broke one evening. Since then it's been used to patch a pannier, stop an annoying rattle from a brake lever, hinge a glasses case, seal the vents on some cycling footwear and reattach the sole of a bridesmaid's shoe. That last one cast me as hero for a day.
