Anyone done it can you recommend accommodation, preferably a pub to stay in. I fancy a long weekend up this way.

Woolpack http://www.woolpack.co.uk/ is good and so is the (long) walk you can do from there.

There's loads of fantastic accommodation in the Lakes - just a couple of decent pubs that are within a few miles of Hardknott - the Drunken Duck at Barngates and the Mortal Man at Troutbeck - but there's loads from budget to higher end pub type rooms. Only thing I would suggest is that you don't stay too close to the pass - you'll need a good warm up to ride them.

The Screes is a good pub, although it does mean you get Irton pike as a warm up on the way round (it's a 1:8).

Afraid I can't help with accommodation recommendations as I live here so don't need it. I'd be very tempted to stay down in Ravenglass though. Start on the beach, and either ride or take La'al Ratty up to Boot and on to Hardknott.

I drove up it last year and turned around at the top as the snow and ice were quite bad - there is no way on gods earth I would try to cycle up it even if I was a 10 stone whippet (which I'm not) - I do like to challenge myself, but not into self harm so I'll give it a miss.

the view was good and the coffee and cake at the top of each pass was much appreciated. not to mention going down was great fun until we caught a vehicle up!

That's the easy way up! More height to gain from the other side - you're already halfway up at Cockley Beck.

The climb up from Eskdale isn't as bad as it looks - it goes up in a series of steps so you get a chance to recover between the spells of gasping exhaustion. The real killer is climbing Wrynose from Langdale - one long, steep, unrelenting ramp - then it gets steeper near the top.

If you do come up from Eskdale, you need to go part way down the other side to get the best views - the scenery is vast and magnificent. Well worth the effort.

+1
It's worth the effort, the views are great. True, the valley between Hardknott and Wrynose is pretty dull. On rides with my friends they keep insisting in going up Wrynose from the Langdales. It's a toughy as there is no respite and that last kick up at the summit is a beast. Hardknott is easy in comparison.
