In 1933 Raleigh launched a 3 wheeler car.

I understand that Raleigh sold off their automobile side and the new buyer picked the Reliant name simply because so many of the Raleigh parts he had came with an R on them.

It's a good bit in that article link, the guy who bought the rights was the the designer who worked for Raleigh. Reliant took the name form the clutch housing that came stamped with the R.
