Don't take any notice of that 220 minus age. I'm 71 and my max HR is 175 as seen in 10 mile TTs. It is what it is, we're all different.
Edit: I will add... if you have any concerns cycling fora are not the places to seek/take advice from. See your GP.

General rule of thumb for Max HR is 220-age. So in my case it’s 220-29=191. It depends on your age I guess. For someone in their late teens early 20s you can probably get to that max but feel like death. My highest I’ve got since I got my HR monitor was 188 and I felt like I was going to explode. Then again all people are different so YMMV.

I may ask what find of time period are you averaging 170? I’d struggle with that for more than 5 minute intervals tbh.
Rule of thumb its b0ll0x; particularly for a cyclist :okay: I was regularly hitting 194-5bpm and 202bpm when pushing to the edge in the last 12months and my mate will regularly hit 199-200bpm and peaks at 202bpm too. Neither of us are 18years (double that and add 5). Conversely in my last club there was a really good rider in his mid 20s but had a HR of a 54year old going by that formula :okay:

I would tend to worry the other way in my case, in my 20s my max HR was IRO 210bpm running, now, 10 years later, I have trouble raising it above 165. I'll do a quite hilly ride at a good pace and average mid 140s.

Your heart does what it does, if you're genuinely interested or concerned then see a cardiac specialist.

I could have written almost the same question myself!!

Almost 38, my max HR is 197. I can train at 170 for a good hour without being breathless. Resting HR is about 65 but as soon as I start exercising it's up to 130-140. I'm by no means the fittest person around but I'm not a couch potato either.
