One nearby bungalow that faces due south mounted what looked like cup hooks externally and hung a curtain from them. Another had used a dust sheet. I'm prevaricating between a portable AC unit like the Pinguino or getting a mini split just to cool the lounge/ extension🤔

in Feb 25 you seemed to be strongly recommending a couple of brands... now they're all terrible. What's change your opinion?

Heat pumps are terrible you’ll get faulty equipment & headaches. One day they’ll stop pushing them and say they give off CFC’s or something no very Green.

Gas boilers are terrible you'll get faulty equipment & headaches. One day they'll stop pushing them as they are known to give off poisonous fumes..

"Gas boilers produce combustion by-products such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, which can lead to serious health issues including headaches, dizziness, respiratory problems, and even carbon monoxide poisoning. Proper ventilation and regular maintenance are essential to minimise exposure to these harmful gases."

That’s why I’m on the top British Gas care plan and they are all the most strict guys ever.

The new build house around the corner is solely heated by an ASHP. They're moving in just before Christmas. We reckon a flue for a wood stove will appear before next winter. It's not just the raw heating power, it's the frequent loss of electric supply here. We had three long powercuts last year, one for 18 hours in a January snowstorm. They may have batteries (they have a small array of solar panels) but not many battery installations will run an ASHP for almost a day.

At my old place the aftermarket air source heat pump was trouble free and effective.

Here im one of the last houses with gas CH, and the later ones with ASHP are having all sorts of problems. Thats not an issue with the devices themselves, more likely builders using the cheapest components and installers they can get away with. It certainly doesnt bode well going forward for new builds with them.

That's not correct. We've the smallest battery we were offered and the heat pump last used more than its capacity in a day way back in February. With a newer house than our 40-year-old one, better-insulated so a less powerful pump needed, a small battery will run it maybe 2 days. The question will be whether they actually wire it in so it can power the house in a power cut, which costs extra so many house batteries can't.

I think the main downside of an ASHP for me is the need for a hot water tank and not really having a convenient space to put it.
The main upside is the BUS grant.

How does overpaying the privatised former monopoly for a care plan change the laws of physics and stop gas burning polluting a home's air?

It makes your house safe. Only a bit of pollution outside maybe. I’ve worked in the ASHP industry and the failure rates are high. Also very expensive systems still.

A company went bust. Well a division of a famous company that make them. Also a few rival companies are struggling and I believe one will close in a year.

That’s the bit a lot of people don’t understand. Many think that they are resilient against power outages because they have solar and / or a battery but without a gateway to allow the home to enter island mode, solar and battery will simply shut down to protect those working upstream to restore power.

We’re a fully electric home, having storage heaters, immersion heater for hot water, and ceramic core electric heaters in some of the smaller rooms.

We enquired about an ASHP before we upgraded our old storage heaters to HHR variants but, as there is currently no radiator system in the house, it would mean getting all that installed along with the plumbing before an ASHP would work. Both messy and expensive then there is the ASHP costs on top.

Air to air heat pumps are available but our walls are a meter thick in places making that too a difficult installation.

As it stands we get enough heat from our current setup and, with solar and a battery, have shifted over 90% of our electricity use to off peak.
