Greetings from "Over There." I'm a single retired New Yorker named Bruce. I've been cycling since 1956 and I'm a former club rider with years of century and part-century rides in moderately rolling terrain and solo self-contained/self-supported touring. I just had a total hip replacement, so I’m presently spending my winter nights “grounded” and fantasizing about long-distance self-contained, self-supported international tours that are limited only by climate, terrain severity and safety.

I’m now in the early part of the research phase in preparation for doing the UK End to End tour in 2014. That research led me to Cycle Chat. My present (though evolving) plan with the UK EtE tour is to fly to Shannon, cycle up to the Malin Head-Ballycastle area, get over to John O’Groats and then do the UK EtE--with the CTC run built into the middle of it. I should get to Lands End by early fall, and my plan from that point on is uncertain. The overall goal is to make this tour “the ultimate dream UK cycling tour of a lifetime” and I anticipate three or four months on the road with substantial sightseeing and dart shooting along the way.

I’m pretty well set with equipment, clothing, etc---but my knowledge of the lay of the land(s) I’ll be touring through is dangerously close to nil. I’m well into internet research, but I’d appreciate any and all leads on websites, info sources and anything that might help me out with The Big Infoquest. Many thanks in advance for your leads/tips/pointers.

In fact, some guidance with one question I can think of right now would be great. I remember that a couple decades ago, the UK reception accorded to retractable point darts would best have been described as straight-up hostility. Is that still the case, or has the UK moved out of the “fixed point darts only welcome here” mindset and into a “retractable point darts OK here” atmosphere?

Good Morning BruceF and:welcome:.
I am sure that as folk wake up and log in you will be overwhelmed with advice.
Enjoy.

Hi and welcome,
I usually use Google Maps to sus out the lay of the land. Street view gives you very good closeups and you can take a virtual journey along sections that are of interest. You can also use the distance measuring facility to plot your course.
I wish you all the best in your venture.
Remember to stop when you get to Lands End to avoid underwater cycling experiences. Ha,Ha.

Hi Bruce! :hello:

You should get plenty of good advice here for your UK tour. The only part of the country where we are thin on the ground is the far north of Scotland, but plenty of CycleChat riders have done JOGLE or LEJOG so they would be able to help you.

One piece of advice that I can give you now is to expect rain! We have had wet summers in the UK for 6 or 7 years now since the Jet Stream decided to take its summer holidays (vacations!) further south. You could be lucky when you come over, but I sense that a new weather pattern has developed and we might be stuck with it!

I'm not sure about the darts question though!

To the question above about the bike I'll be on... I don't yet have the bike I'll be doing this jaunt on. I'll probably be having it built in late 2013 or early 2014 and haven't yet finalized how I'm going to spec this one out. In fact......one question to help me with design minutia... Are the 700c (or so-called "29'er") wheels, tubes and tires presently common enough in the UK to be a prudent choice for the LEJOG run or is it still pretty much a 26" wheel world over there?

700c is the standard road wheel size here and has been since before Greg Lemond got me back into cycling in 1989. It must have changed over since 1969 when I'd ridden a bike which had wheels measured in inches.

Another thing Bruce - if you'd prefer to ride alone, fair enough, but if you'd like some company on various legs of your tour, I'm sure that we could rustle up CycleChat forum rides to coincide with some of them! (Lonely northern Scotland possibly excepted.)

Good Luck with the ride Bruce! The UK has a long history of playing darts and you should be able to get a game in most pubs and working mens clubs on your route. I'm not sure about the first leg of your journey as it's in the Republic of Ireland, which is a different country, the people are friendly enough, but I don't know if their pub culture is quite the same.

:welcome: to Cyclechat Bruce. I like the idea of this tour you're planning & hope it goes well. Keep us posted when you have the basics of your desired route planned and I'm sure the members on here will be very happy to help with the details.

ColinJ has already covered it, but 700c (ISO 622) and mountain bike style 26" (ISO 559) are the two most common wheel sizes over here so whichever you choose you'll be able to find spares easily.
