Thanks to all for the help.

SPECIAL thanks to classic33 and biggs682.

Please see the latest photos.

As directed by classic33 and biggs682 I have rephotographed the hub for the right numbers (if I am not mistaken?):

60. 1.

Still can't date it via the internet info, sorry.

'Convention 2' is '3'???

What year is the frame then?

And what model?

100% it is black.
100% it is 3-speed

So it can't be a 'Dawn' can it?

The ads you posted both say 4 speed.

Superbe Sports Tourist? (Ad uploaded stares 3-speed)

Or another model?

Still confused!

Over to the aficionados... again!

Thank you.

So what year and what model, Gents?

@SF959 will the rear hub is a January 1960 produced "ag" 3 speed dyno hub same as on my 50's Rudge , similar frame number so i would say yours is an early 60's Bike .

I doubt for sure if you will ever find out the exact model , but this is a good starting place in my mind and worth saving this link http://veterancycleclublibrary.org.uk/library/ .

You also have to think its at least 40+ years old so some bits might have been replaced , my old 50's Raleigh started out life with a 4 speed rear hub but it slowly destroyed itself so now sports a 3 speed unit .

When posting people's name add a @ symbol in front of there name and they get a notification which is quicker for them to react to , sorry it just helps .

Have you ridden it any more ?

Hello

@biggs682 you have been brilliant!

As has @classic33. Thank you.

Thank you very much!

Not offended with you pointing out that I should put an @ sign before a member's ID for notifications to be sent.
I had no idea. Learning process. You're very kind thank you. I don't know how to use the forum.
'Think' I emailed the Administrator with questions on how to use the forum and send direct (private) messages etc but last time I checked had no reply.
Re your offer of the spare saddle bag off your tandem: I had a look at it but would respectfully decline: it looks too big for my needs. But thank you anyway.
Re riding the bike: no. Have had a problem with the PC preventing me ordering new tyres and tubes. On my phone it is too difficult for me to do internet purchases.
Existing tubes are knackered.

Took photo of the sticker above the accumulator that you ( or classic33?) enquired about. Please see below.

Thank you for the link to try to date the frame by the frame number previously discussed above.
I will look at it on the PC which should be returned to duty this week: it'll by too hard view it on my phone.
Surprised no-one could date it straight away from the frame numbers provided.
And disappointed I still have no idea what model it is!
Further investigation required obviously.

On another note I bought an old rack from a friend.

Black and rusty so it fits in well with the bike's paintwork.

Looks to be from the 40's/50's/60's?
Spotted maker's name?
Midland
Sports Model
Made in England.

Does anyone have the three original brackets for it?
Or know where I can get them?

Thank you again all ... but great thanks to @biggs682 @classic33 and @raleighnut ... you appear to be the mainstay of this vintage forum and I am very grateful for your kind help and information provided.

I'm by no way a mainstay, I just like finding things out about stuff.

Same here it amazes me what i have learnt from Cycle chat and its not all been bike related either .

The rack stays would normally mount in the same point as the rear guard does on the rear drop outs whilst the fr one might have had a clamo bracket that went the other side of the stays with a central bolt going through both plates . You could use " P " clips on the rear stays if they dont line up and a front bracket shouldn't be too hard to find a similar one from a more modern rack .

No probs re saddlebag .

SA Dyno-Three AG Hub dates from January 1960. 60 being the year, 1 being the month(First month of the year).
First in production in 1946, last in 1983

Type FG 4-Speed Dynohub in production from 1947 until 1960. This would put it at the back end of the Raleigh Superbe Dawn Tourist production run, 1955 - 1959. It may explain why there's a three-speed hub in place. Placed there by the shop, as a replacement or Raleigh as the other went out of production.

It may not be a Raleigh Superbe Dawn Tourist, but a Raleigh Sports Tourist. Which was in production at the same time
This would explain the hub, type of brakes fitted and the colour in one go. Raleigh Sports Tourist available in black.

35943AF would place it in the period 1962 to 1964, more towards the 64 end.

The yellow badge/decal over the the accumulator is a Raleigh "70th Anniversary" one, ruling out anything before 1957.

Two more questions
What size are the wheels, should be on the tyres. And what size is the frame?

Comfy armchair to one person & a plank to the next
Great advice regarding the stand options: thank you. I know someone who has a 1940's bike with a stand (presumably U-stand or W-stand as you describe them?) which lifts the rear wheel completely off the floor. Pretty sure that the bike came to him with it fitted. I will have to go and examine it now!
Vintage dirty and rusty side stand for 26 inch wheels is another possible option?
Where can I get a U-stand or W-stand?
Since I last wrote, Laxzo has got one in but it may be a bit shiny and of course it's not light: http://www.laxzo.com/spring-loaded-...tand-double-legs-bike-stand-retro-16422-p.asp

Other than that, it's a case of keeping an eye on the ebay lottery and shops like SJS, Practical Cycles, Really Useful Bikes, Dutch Bike Bits, Star Cycle Spares and so on. These things seem to last for ages, until they get abused too much, so the UK shops maybe don't sell enough to keep stock all the time.

Hello

Apologies... but with work and stuff and not had time to check the forum.

Thank you all for the kind advice and time taken to post.

@classic33 THANK YOU!

I don't know what you do (or did) for a living but you could be a great detective! Great census info?!
Dealer information still a mystery to all then.
If your kind investigations see the dealer (Skeltons) fading away by WW2 etc ... and hub is Jan 1960 and frame (thanks for that information) is 62-64 ... where were Skeletons post-war? How can they. E explained?! No records? Weird. Perhaps a trip to Warrington would help with that ...

Wheels definitely 26 x 1 3/8 (from side wall of existing Raleigh Record tyres)

Frame is 23 or 23 1/4... as luck would have it and perfect for me. Even though it was love at first sight(!) if the frame size was not suitable I wouldn't have bought it. Bought it to ride ...

Great pic of the insides of an accumulator.... I had no idea what was inside! Top 'cap' appears to be (soft) lead-like material? Is that correct?

Thanks again for your kind help and the brilliant information.

@mjr

Thanks for your help and the link attached. Certainly something to think about and not far off what I want.

Perhaps too shiny. Too modern-looking? I'd have to get it painted or powder coated black though.

I expect the rear wheel stand to be heavy so that's not a problem.
I want the functionality of a stand.
Light weight is not really a fear for this bike... it's a vintage cruiser for dry warm days on short trips/rides.

Thanks for the dealer suggestions to check out when I have time. I wasn't aware of them and wouldn't have had a clue so that is very helpful indeed.

I have attached some photos of the stand on my friend's bike (28 inch wheels on that bike).

Proper vintage looking and would, I think, suit my old Raleigh?

Anyone with a better suggestion I welcome your input.

Thank you.
