There is a sign on the pavement telling saying the road narrows. The left lane has a big arrow painted on it showing left turn only. The lorry was in the correct lane to proceed ahead, anyone in the left lane trying to go straight was in the incorrect lane.

Maybe the op should have flapped his arms a bit more? Seems to help around Aldwich?
I would have said that overtaking at a pinch point when (assuming) you couldn't see directly in front of the lorry, was more inconsiderate than the late indication.
+1I certainly wouldn't have tried that over take. Indicator or not.
...plus the Skip lorry has one of those "Cyclists Stay Back" stickers so, you know, it's not their fault if any cyclist tries to overtake
