Last week I bought a pair of proper Tannoy speakers off ebay in tip top condition. No other hi fi equipment but hey. Borrowed an AV amp off a neighbour and butched some old wires so I could give it a listen tonight. Well, I only got it going about half ten so can't really crank it up, but I'm loving the soundscape!

There's a lot more treble than on my (still good) home theatre system and the sound is, how can I put it, ten times warmer. Getting some noise that I'm not sure if its in the signal or just coz it's cheap wires. Methink's I'm going to enjoy tomorrow tho!

Even better, my dad's decided he never uses his separates, so I'm having those away at some point. :becool:

That is all.

I used to have a pair of Tannoy Mercury speakers many years ago. At some point I sold them but cannot remember to whom or for how much. They were good. Can't remember what amp. It might have been a NAD. Anyway I now have a pair of B&W floor standers which I got cheap a few years ago from a work colleague who was emigrating and matched them with Mission amps which is an awesome sound combination when watching films especially as everything is now digital.

Well I do still have my Sony surround system which is really good for movies, very clean tweet and lots of subwoofer if needed, plus surround is nice. But I don't really watch a lot of movies but am always listening to music.

I've already discovered layers to some of the songs I've got that I never knew were there before.

The Tannoys are from the early 90s and are quite sizeable. About 50cm by 30 by 25 or something. It's an old Technics amp. Can't complain. My dad's stuff is Cambridge Audio?

Could be the Tannoy Mercurys. I think mine had the name on the front at the bottom or on the back adjacent to the speaker cable poles.

Camridge Audio amps were ok.

Technics passable, but if free you can't complain.

Don't waste your cash go for basic twin cable you don't need to spend a fortune. It all does the same job and unless you have the hearing of an owl you won't be able to tell the difference.

Thanks. Well, the wires I'm currently using are ones I just cut off an old pair of Panasonic speakers that go with a midi system I've no longer got. They're just skinny copper cables and seem to be doing ok so far.

There is quite a bit of echo generally on all vocals, I don't know if that's the production on the tracks or something to do with the sound processing on the computer. (at present, all music routed through the motherboard soundchip)
