Hello

I was taken out by a van yesterday, classic left hook.

The driver stopped maybe 20 meters away and watched me get up and some nice people coming to see that I was ok, then he drove off. The nice people got all his details, said they are happy to tell police driver was at fault and I have grassed him in to the fuzz. I was told the case would be passed to Hampshire road crime unit and they should be in touch next week.

Bike seems ok, put it in to a good bike shop for a well overdue service anyway and they will take note of anything that might be crash damage. Jersey is knackered, helmet took a bang... looks ok... maybe should be replaced. Porridge pot in my bag got broken, I was looking forward to my porridge.

I have grazes and bruises, shoulder, hip and knee painful today, have taken pics of grazes but will probably be 100% in a week at most.

Just wondering what to expect to happen next? Anyone had something similar?

There's a few on here that have had similar. Have a look at Accident Advice

Helmet has done it's job and will need replacing, no maybe on this part.

Great thread that thank you, needs a reminder to turn off camera noise on your phone when taking pics of injuries in the work toilets cubicle though....

Was kind of wondering what police might expect of me if they do chappy for leaving the scene? Probably less of a deal in real life than it is in my head.

Witnesses seem rock solid, gave me a lift to the station and said their son had recently had 3 ribs broken when a driver knocked him off his bike.

Hadn't really thought of claiming for what will be maybe £80 worth of damage Inc new lid.

Get the names and contact details of your witnesses, and the registration of the vehicle involved.

Get yourself checked out as soon as possible though. Then worry about the bike.

The thread is made up from advice given on here & elsewhere by a few people, into one thread. Makes it easier find if it's all in one place.

Sorry to hear about this @GrahamS - what a horrid thing to happen!

Glad you are pursuing with the police. Definitely take it through the vehicle insurance company too. You may be surprised at how the costs in a situation like this can escalate. Like you have said your jersey and helmet need replacing, you have had to purchase at least one train ticket, and your bike is now at the LBS who will expect some payment. Keep receipts for everything!

I hope your injuries heal well and soon.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
You also might need physio too ,I fell off at low speed and my shoulder is still not right months later.catalougue your injuries and keep notes on everything.

Go see your GP tomorrow and get your injuries documented (assuming you didn't go to A&E)

Keep all receipts etc for any transport needed for appointments etc

If you're a member of British Cycling, Cycling UK etc call their legal team. If injuries look like they might be ongoing, engage a cycling accident specialised solicitor if not (you have 3 years to start an injury claim). Any of the joints you say are sore could be harbouring a hidden tear (my seemingly innocuous shoulder injury ended up needed surgery 3 years after the accident, and a further surgery 9 months after that )

Sorry to see this, hope you are better soon. I expect that the van is likely to be untraceable or stolen if the driver scarpers when so many witnesses can take his registration number.

Or the driver is just an imbecile of the first order

Lady I spoke to on 101 said reg and company matched.

In fairness to the driver it was a really wide road with no need to change your driving line to overtake a cyclist and I was only going a little bit slower than the traffic (37kph according to Strava, boom). I was probably in his blind spot for ages.

But, you know, that's why you check blind spots. Him leaving the scene pisses me off the most now, at the time he looked like a big angry skin head and I didn't really fancy a confrontation.

Failure to stop at a damage RTC, witnesses galore, should get reported for the FTS. Doubt the collision itself will earn him a charge unless he was being a real wally.

Hope you're ok.

Don't use xxxxxxxx Ltd.

You've opened yourself up to a civil law case there and possibly undermined your own - I'd take the specific out of that post.

Nothing to stop you adding it to the thread.

Different cameras could be used for photographing injuries, so not included.
