Out on today's ride and got hit by a car again. Nothing too serious this time, got clipped by his wing mirror as he went by far too close. I was thrown into the side of the road and footpath. Suffered a slight graze to the arm and a ripped top. Bastard didn't stop even though the impact took his mirror clean off. I think he was on his mobile, which would explain the not stopping. Unfortunately it happened so fast I didn't get a reg, but I know it was a silver BMW, as he kindly left the evidence behind. As I'm not hurt, I'm not going to do anything about it (talked to the police they said without witness they can't proceed), but I did smash up his wing mirror before I left (it was in fact intact), so it will at least cost him a new one (if he was bothered to come back looking for it), which knowing BMW, won't be cheap.
Knowing me, I'll get 7rs back luck for the mirror.......

Hope you are ok mate.

Firstly I'm glad to hear that you are ok.

I have to say I believe the police are wrong in this instance. Yes it will be difficult to track him down, but just because there's no witness should not mean that they ignore a hit and run accident.

Not sure what a cam would have done. I was thrown away from the car and only looked up after about 10secs, by which time he was gone. I doubt very much a cam would have captured anything.

This was the damage to me:

My fantastic wife has already darned and sewed the top, in such a way, you can't even see the damage anymore....miracle skills. ^_^

I'm going to have some nice scabs I MUST resist from picking (picking scabs was always a guilty pleasure as a child......)

I agree with this ^^^.
Just because there are no known witnesses, it doesn't mean that there aren't any !
Also, aren't the streets of Brum riddled with CCTV cameras? Shouldn't be too hard to spot a silver BMW with a missing nearside mirror.

I'm sure they would still investigat a hit and run that left some one dead or more seriously injured without a witness so perhaps they should employ some of the same techniques here. As you point out this is still a hit and run and knocking off the wing mirror can not have gone unnoticed by the driver. What I find very disturbing is that the driver had no way of knowing that jdtate101 was not badly hurt. For all they knew he could have had a serious gash or worse. Just because the driver may have seen them still standing (in the interior mirror obviouslt) doesn't mean everything was fine. For this reason I think this is a very serious incident, it was just lucky that it didn't have serious consequences. The police should realise this. Where is the harm in putting out a notice in the area asking for witnesses. At the very least the driver may see it and get some idea of the potential severity of his actions or lack of them.

I'm not sure about the street I was on, it's a fairly quiet residential street that I use to get across to cannon hill park, I was on my way to test out some new Vittoria Cross XG Pro tyres in the mud (still did after...no need for a small accident to ruin a good ride)

I'll give them another ring later and see if they want to change their minds......

It may have been a quiet side road, but I'm sure the Pershore Road, Bristol Street areas would be covered, so he'd probably have been "captured" at some point.

I hope you get a better response. After seeing your graze I feel quite cross that they could just drive off like that. Of course I can completely see why you would want to just leave it and under the same circumstances I think I'd want to just forget about it as well. It can feel as if the frustration of trying to get some one to take it seriously adds insult to the injury and why would anyone want to put themselves through that? The temptation really is just to cut ones losses and save all the extra grief. I would totally understand anyone just leaving it. I think we are all too familiar with the complacency that surrounds things like this to expect that anything will be done or that the police will even try. But in the hope that you get a result, good luck and let us know what happens.

You'd be surprised at how much a camera would capture, might have got a glimpse of the reg before (or after) the incident happened. You may have passed the car earlier in your journey.

With that, I would be so tempted to hang around that area same time of day & keep a look out for the car... I know that's no evidence of whether the BMW which you see next week with no wing mirror is the same one but odds are.. There's a loon near me who has his ear welded to the mobile all along a single track muddy lane every Monday evening. One day I will catch him on video.

I agree too.

Don't let the police fob you off. It may have been an isolated occurrence but equally it may be that police in the same area have reports of a badly driven silver BMW and your information about the mirror having snapped off may be a piece of the jigsaw they need.

I don't believe for a second that had this been a cop knocked off his bike that he'd be told to forget it...
