I had friends years ago who home schooled their kids, but in what I thought was a particularly sensible way ...

A bunch of families (five or six, I think it was) who lived close together basically created an informal school. The parent who was best at maths taught all the kids maths, the parent who was best at English ...

That meant the kids got a range of teachers, not just their parents, and also that they socialised with other kids all the time, not just in limited after-'school' activities.

An "old" article but timely in that it was shared this morning by someone I know on FB who plans to home school her kids:

My only experience of home schooling is via a friend at university who was home schooled through her primary school years, which came to end after she launched a lengthy, hard-fought but eventually successful campaign to go to school. I think she benefited from both experiences and know she had no regrets about either. Her two children both attend the local schools.

It is amazing to hear the range of feelings about home schooling elsewhere. In the US, we have a great deal of home schooling despite the fact that there are a range of other options(Religious,Co-Op, etc) and I see that as a plus. The State Board of Education in Illinois also has requirements that have to be met, I believe, but this varies by state. I was out of school for some time in Junior High School, and my Mother had to teach me at home, as she was a housewife at the time. I think I learned that my Mother was a learned person, quite conversant with mathematics, modern literature, and music. My Father handled Industrial Arts, the Classics, and Art as well as Science. Pretty good for a Steel Mill Hand and a Homemaker. I also have to say that my sisters were some help too.

The problem here is, people don't like others to exercise a choice that may be different.
No it's not. Home schooling isn't just about personal choice, it's about parents making choices for their children. No-one should have any issue with children being taught at home when that produces a better, more rounded, education, but in some cases children are taken out of the school system because of unreasoning prejudices by their parents.
A major driver for home schooling is religion. Parents can tell their children whatever they want in their leisure time, but I don't see why we should applaud - or even accommodate - those who want to take them out of school so that they can fill their heads with pernicious drivel like Creationism.

So why not just send them to a real school and have then taught by professional teachers?

Absolute claptrap, the majority of the groups we were involved with we're absolute rubbish.

We home schooled our kids until they were 4, it seems this is not always the case. When I say we, I mean the wife, I was out at work bringing the dosh home, fine job she did as well.

My parents home schooled me off and on throughout the overlap of our joint existences. I try to follow the example with my kids. We all also went to school.

Good point that, hopefully all parents do. I am still proof reading my youngest PGSE course work for him.
