Somebody once lent me a road bike with a triple and a 64 tooth big chainring in South Africa. It was a nightmare to ride because the middle ring was a 54 and it wouldn't drop down onto the "small" ring so I ended up climbing some big hills in something like 54/26, which nearly flippin' killed my legs.

Maybe it wasn't the chainrings that were too big but simply that your legs were too small?

It is a BIG ring but it might be powering a correspondingly big sprocket!

I wanted a gear of about 39/14 for my new singlespeed bike, but I achieved it by fitting a 52/19 combination. (It should be more long-lasting because the pedalling load is spread over more teeth, and it might be more efficient.) The gear looks pretty big at first glance; I have only ridden 70 miles on the bike but have already had 2 other riders comment on it. They hadn't noticed the biggish sprocket though.

What's going on with the forks? They look like the ends point the wrong way.

They will be from a bike used for motor pacing, so the rider can get closer to the pacer.
