What is this obsession with eating oats hot? Just slap a bit of milk into 50-100g of rolled oats with a few sultanas. Takes less than a minute to make and eat.

If after a cycling day, you have a good meal that night, then maybe a banana and a coffee to bring some stimulation for breakfast the next day. After this, I will stop and have water or banana or chocolate or a road side crepe or a tea and slice of baguette with pate or something. (France Im talking here) but only light.
The evening meal last me into the next day lunch where I have a light snack, then crack on again.
Through my experience, two weeks cycling recently, I ate mainly baguette with pate and every few nights boil up some ravioli with crusty bread or my pocket rocket stove and hauling camping gear and can push around 60-70 miles if needed be.
I know after a good evening meal I have not burned this of because I would have slept or done a little walk about so my metabolism ain't going to burn this.
So look into a good evening meal then a light breakfast...

I might start having a bowl of thin(ish) porridge with soft dried apricots in before i go for a longish ride. Some say you should eat a hearty full English breakfast, but i don't think all that protein salt and fat will be of benefit?

In that case it's your lifestyle that needs to be adjusted before considering your diet.

Not really my lifestyle more my tongue and throat. I had the "Big C" eight years ago and although things have improved it takes me twice as long as the average person to eat/swallow things. That's why i prefer things thin/watery/liquidised most times.

Ah, that explains things. I hope not being able to scoff your breakfast is your worst problem. Sounds like a pretty excellent recovery.

I'll repeat my earlier suggestion: blending yogurt, milk, oats and fruit makes a pretty stupendous breakfast. Pick your fruits according to season/your taste. Avocados or banana to thicken, if you like.
