I used to have these there ok for short trips. I now use bib shorts which are far more comfortable admittedly they are more £££

Might as well not bother, the padding is so thin...or just use a panty liner, no great difference and even cheaper ;)

To the OP, why do you need to buy padded shorts? Discomfort...if so get something with some proper well fitting padding...and check your saddle is the right width, shape and at the right angle / position too

It was advised by a colleague to get padded shorts etc for long rides.

To be honest I haven't done a long ride yet on my new bike. So will try a few times without. I remember I used to get very sore thighs from rubbing when I used to cycle a lot. Will normal cycling shorts help with that?

Maybe but that sounds like the saddle is the wrong shape for your thighs, tight lycra might help hold things in a bit and the rubbing will be against the fabric not your legs, especilaly if you are on the larger size.
Also, if you do get some, wear commando, pant seams will rub

I have big thighs. Always have done. In 5'9" and weight about 105kgs.
I used to do a fair bit of weight training so its not all fat.....

There was once a thing on the radio (before the rugby world cup I believe) and they were measuring the players thighs.. And I thought.. Why not measure mine and compare! Mine were 1.5 inches larger than the biggest players lol.. Hence the rubbing...
Thanks for the tip.
