Its a good way of avoiding compulsory purchase - imagine the costs of identifying and commencing legal proceedings against hundreds of thousands of owners per acre!

Only thing I can think of that makes me borderline snob is, I don't think I've ever bought anything secondhand and these days, I don't think I can be bothered with the hassle of selling anything secondhand either... I'd rather just give stuff to charities.

Same here, it was done to prevent/slow the land being sold, they'd have to contact everyone who owns their sq foot.
