How difficult is it to replace a star nut assembly?

You don't need the tool - just an old bolt and something to smack it in with . .due to it having two 'stars' it'll self-straighten as i goes in. I've lost count of the ones I've fitted this way and never had a problem.

Tool's on its way, so I'll use it. But don't see any great difficulty if I'm careful. Will have to wait on the weather, though...
