What I did the last time I sold a car was ask the buyer to arrange to withdraw the cash at my local bank branch. He did that, and I immediately handed the cash back over the counter to pay into my account. That way it was a cash transaction with no risk of fraud, but as neither we nor the cash ever left the bank counter no risk of either of us getting mugged for the cash.
