Either you are incredibly unlucky, you have dodgy rim tape or the tyres you have are utter junk.

Rim tape?? These were all punctures caused by hawthorn cuttings which are on a lot of the trails I ride, especially in spring / early summer. The tyres are OEM Scwalbe Rapid Robs, not the best for puncture protection but not really junk.
Good tyres work just as well - I've done over 4k miles on my Conti Hardshells without puncturing (tempting fate:ohmy:) but the OP asked does slime work - I say it does.
There is a weight penalty where you least want it but I doubt it costs me 15 minutes in every 4 hours, which is what puncturing was doing, not to mention the inconvenience and general messiness of changing a tube on a muddy wheel in the rain.
