Achieved an X in English lit. CSE* which was my proudest achievement in school, eventually got HNCs in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture at Barrow college of FE, employers asked if I wanted to go to university, I said no, why would I want to "live" in a grotty city for 3 years for a hardly worthwhile pay increase?
* Lowest of the low, even below unclassified, mainly because I started a rebellion against that godawful "lord of the flies" crap.

I've got the HND version. I spent a week in Barrow on a ship, which was a more than enough for me.
Travel comes from my professional engineering qualifications. At the moment I'm travelling up and down next to an oil rig. For a bit of variety we sometimes travel down then up.

I got 100% in my 11-plus!

Strictly speaking, I got 100% in my 'mock' 11-plus, a few weeks before the real thing. My teacher accused me of cheating and made me sit another paper while he watched me like a hawk. I got 100% in that one too! :okay:

Oh, and a BSc. There was talk of an MPhil., but I'd had enough of that kind of thing by then. If I want to test my brain now I play speed Sudoku!

I've graduated high school with Honours, and am looking to travel for awhile now before I decide on whether or not to pursue a post-secondary education. At the moment, I'm a published travel writer, and so that's something I'm proud of. I guess with a career such as writing, the arts, etc - you don't need a post-secondary education, but it is an asset. I've got a friend whose a bloody good artist IMO, and she's only in high school. I tell her that she should pursue her artistry, as it's her passion. She's just started a Facebook page for her artwork, feel free to check that out: https://www.facebook.com/LayliaBennettArtwork?fref=ts

Where I'll go once I'm done travelling? I've no idea. I've got all sorts of ideas, and things that I think I'd be good at, or that appeal to me. Such as, teaching English as a Second Language, going into Law Enforcement, Journalism?

I've not got a bloody clue.

"When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder
I can think at all
And though my lack of education
Hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall" - Paul Simon with lyrics from Kodachrome.

I have obtained many pieces of paper which state how clever I am. It is a wonder I can think at all!

I don't regret my time at university as it allowed me to meet such a variety of people and experience new ideas and different opinions. I've seen life from different sides of the tracks and the only answer I've got is that nothing's "better", nothing's "worse" - it's the people you meet along the way who matter, not your job, qualifications or income. peanuts exist in all walks of life but so do the top folk.

I remember reading a colleague's essay at university (not peaking, I was asked to!) and her ease with the subject matter was astounding. It almost made me want to give up on the spot.

I used to think I was reasonably bright (I had decent school results) but that fair put me into my place.

A teacher friend of mine had the honorific title Dr and had two first degrees, a masters and a PhD to his name. He had a plummy accent and was an excellent teacher, so much so, that a top independent school in London offered him a job. His charisma in the classroom and teaching skills obtained top grades from his students but it all unravelled when his aloofness and snottiness towards his head of department led to background checks revealed that all of his qualifications but his first degrees were fictional. He was called into the headmaster's office and offered two choices:

  • Resign and keep his 'letters' and be given a damning reference that would do him no favours in any school.
  • Correct his qualifications and be given a a reference that would focus on his indisputable teaching skills and supportive of any post in a state school.

He chose the latter course of action and obtained a good job in a girl's school.
