Usually somewhere between 20 - 60 miles for me. My longest ever ride was 86 miles. I sometimes feel I should do a century just so I can say I've done it but haven't round to it. It's not about miles, average speed, heart rates or cadence for me. I just enjoy the sense of freedom of being out in the open air and taking time to enjoy my surroundings. I generally plan tours for 50 miles per day as any more and it starts to become rushed and loses it's enjoyment.

A new job and change of location from rural to urban has reduced my mileage really as I walk to work or to the shops as battling busy rush hour traffic on a bike is not my idea of fun. Now with longer evenings I want to start doing evening rides out into the countryside again.

I was stuck in a must-get-home-by-lunchtime mindset, then one day I just decided I'd include lunch in the ride, and so I rode all day (and set a new personal daily distance record). One day, your colleague may end up doing that (or maybe not).
It was years ago and he was a young man then. He told me that he was only interested in cycling for fitness. He basically found it 'boring'*** so he wanted to do shortish, intense rides rather than all-day relaxed ones! Maybe he would feel differently now, I don't know - he got married, had kids, and moved away. It must be 10 years since I last saw him.

*** Before any kind person suggests the obvious - I made a joke about it being me that was boring him, but he assured me that he had always been the same. He just wanted to 'crack on and get it done' and then get home and do 'more interesting' things.

For me its the commute to and from work at around 20 miles a day, 2 or 3 times a week with the odd monthly 30ish mile early Sunday morning ride. Like a lot of people have already said, I too like to throw in a long ride once a year. I completed my first century ride last year and looking to top it again this year, usually in September when the kids have gone back to school.
