How far does your Alfine 8 snap ring go on

I'm new to Alfine 8, just wondering if it's normal for the snap ring to not go on very far. The cross-sectional picture in the Shimano fitting instructions shows the snap ring just barely engaging with the outer face of the groove, but I'm a bit wary in case it's just a schematic drawing.

I've tried to force it deeper into the groove, but it looks like it's probably not supposed to go in all the way as the outer face of the groove is a chamfer, rather than being vertical. After tapping it all round the circumference with a flat blade screwdriver and hammer, the gap I have between the ends of the snap ring is ~7mm. Is that about right?

I fitted one a couple of weeks ago. I found a You Tube video that helped.



A gap of c5mm in the circumference is about right. Basically if you can't get it off easily, it is probably fitted correctly.
