I think the answer is "it depends" ;)

When I was in my 20's and began cycle commuting, I noticed huge gains in my fitness and physique in a very short timespan.

Now at 59, nine months of cycling has only seen me make marginal gains over a much longer period.

What I would say though, is that every second of my cycling over the age of 50 has been worth a million seconds of my cycling under 25.

I'd say the next million minutes will be worth more than all the previous.

I'm only getting outside once a week at the minute, but a decent long ride on the MTB with a friend at about the same level, so we can push on for a bit then sit up and relax too. The rest of the time I train indoors on a spin bike, probably 4 sessions a week. I need exercise or I become grumpy and lazy. The only time I really don't do any riding is when I go away on holiday for a couple of weeks.
