Sorry, but I really don't see where anyone is being 'patronized into the ground'.
Err... no, you didn't quite get my meaning, I was being somewhat sarcastic! Perhaps it's a bad habit I've got into, on this forum....

The recommended guidelines are a load of arse. They were plucked out of the air when the government was in one of its periodic bouts of moral funk about the state of the nation, and have no basis in medical science whatsoever. None. (One of the original committee stated exactly this in response to a Guardian 'Notes & Queries' query a few years ago.) All you can say with any certainty is that too much alcohol is not good for you. But as to what constitutes 'too much'...

(Before the current recommended guidelines were introduced, the previous government advice was that more than a bottle of wine a day for an adult male was probably not wise...no more than 2/3 or so for the ladeez.)

Recommended guidelines - is that like RDA?

Probably around 20 - 25 units a week for me.

I go to the pub/bar once a week (at the weekend) and drink between six and ten pints of c.5% beer. A can or two once or twice a week at home if i feel like it. Not every week.

I quite like being drunk, tbh. It's fun to be drunk with others. Talking, laughing, dancing, all that kind of stuff. Alone and mildly drunk, you can let your mind wander whilst your, kind of, doing something else, like searching for new music or posting on CC, for eg. But, of course, it can be taken too far. And puking up on other CC users is going too far.

Having worked in 'substance' misuse for seven years you should know that alcohol is infact a drug, thus can be abused. This arbitrary distinction between alcohol and other drugs, which is seems almost purely based on historical and cultural precedents not evidence of harm, seems to pervade almost every part of society. We need to stop using this frankly stupid language (no offence to you) and refer to alcohol as what it is- 'a drug', one of the more harmful drugs out there as I'm sure as a substance misuse worker you're acutely aware.<div><br></div><div>Rant off. We need more people working in that area anyway, so hats off to you for doing it.</div>

The question is; would you take a tranquiliser instead if it were made available, assuming that use of the tranquiliser offered won't have many of the negative consequences associated with alcohol such as increased risk of liver disease, CVD, death by overdose, high physical dependency, aggressive and general high risk taking behaviour etc? And would you take it if scientists were able to mimic many of the effects of alcohol and make those effects part of the effect of this drug? I certainly would.

No. For me, it's about the taste, it's about trying different ales and it's about sitting in a quiet pub with a pint and a good book or in good company and with good food (nice warm roaring fire optional).

Simply taking a pill would be as boring as a boring muddy cold boring ditch.

Now, if they could make more decent non alchoholic beer, then, THEN I'd be interested!

I don't drink EVERY day and can go for ages without a drink incidentally.

I totally agree. I think many of the problems associated with booze do not come from people drinking real ale or nice wine quietly in a pub. It may be possible though to combine this tranquiliser type drug with alcohol, a benzo/alcohol hybrid as the aim would be to make both drugs safe to use together. You might for example, choose to drink this hybrid when you go out on a big drinking session. You could even have an entire night club just serving drinks containing this drug.

<div><br></div><div>Besides by the time people reach a night club many people wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.</div>

About 2 - 4 units a month however sometimes I go 3 or 4 months without.

However I dread to think how much it was in my late teens / 20's

I only drinkchampagne when I'm happy, and when I'm sad.
Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone.
When I have company, I consider it obligatory.
I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink itwhen I am.
Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty.

Quote attributed to Madame Lily Bollinger and if you substitute 'alcohol' for 'champagne', that is a fair summary of my thoughts!

Also reminds me of the wise person who said that you should ask your doctor to discover they number of units s/he consumes. If it is less than the quantity you consume, then it is time to change your doctor!!!

People, this is a light-hearted cafe thread for people to post their consumption levels.

It is not open house to criticise their level (high, low or none-existant), so if you want to do that start your own thread.

Yes, maybe, but you can't have a picnic without wasps...
