I grew up when cosmetic dentistry simply didn't exist. I have been lucky, structually. I don't have any fillings, probably due to growing up in a very hard water area and never being very interested in sweets. My teeth look a bit wonky, but not too awful, but my dentist tells me that they really are the wrong colour. He would, wouldn't he?

How much does it cost to give me the "film star" look? I'm not sure I want it actually, but I am curious. More important, how often would I have to go back to maintain this faintly ridiculous vanity, and at what expense?

Thank you.

I went to a very good dentist in Vietnam which is usually cheaper than most places and I got a quote for replacing some of the missing teeth and not a full set. This was for replacing the gaps screwing the teeth into the bone inside the mouth. US$30,000, needless to say I didn't go ahead with the work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have good teeth without fillings, then to my way of thinking you'd be nuts to let a dentist bugger about with them at all - never mind taking the top layer of enamel off on the pretext of whitening

I got my teeth whitened on a groupon deal - it's just their way of keeping busy/filling up the bookings schedule. I think I paid about £75, and it did work. Involved about an hour lying under special lighting after they paint some kind of goo on your teeth. Looked good afterwards...for a month or so. Then back to 'as you were'. Definitely wouldn't bother repeating the experience.
