There's only one way the human race can survive sustainably in the long term and its to stop breeding at the rate we do. It's come to a stage now with our planet, we taking all kinds of desperate measures to stop its destruction. Renewable energy , Climate change bills and better modes of transportation. The list goes on and on ( a bit like me lol :-),
At the end of the day though, all these measures are just "sticky plasters" and are only slowing down to inevitable. Even with all these measures ,I think our ever increasing population will become the final nail in the coffin for us. The earth can only sustain a certain amount of as beings, before we outstrip it of its ability to provide us with our needs to survive in the lifestyle were accustomed to.
With our inbuilt human nature ,we will be fighting for precious resources as they become scarce. It's already started really when you look at the plight of some regions of the world. Mass starvation and racial tensions were populations are ever more driven to live together in regions that are deemed as more stable.
If there was a controlled global breeding law we could at least have the chance of making our planet and renewable technologies work for us for the long term. Doom and gloom aghhhh time for a beer :-)

personally i think we'll go on and on. There could be a self inflicted catastrophe that significantly reduces the population, but pockets will survive and possibly thrive.

Yes, that is my assumption too.

It may not be "nice and cuddly". but, Nature will assert itself one way or the other Famine/ Flood/Plague will reset the balance.

or

The two madmen may have a "reset" button after all?

Not that I am saying it will be pleasant, but, we will rebuild, and, make the same mistakes again!

...we will rebuild, and, make the same mistakes again!

Isolated pockets of surviving humans might just evolve into something completely different—even into several different kinds of creature.
Think what happened to the dinosaurs, then look at the birds in the trees.
There's no guarantee that these descendants will be bipedal or large-brained.

There is a theory that the rapture has occurred, but the only people to make the cut were Prince and David Bowie.

Although his loyal followers will be shipped to the new Moonbase, so I should be OK.

Our next step is to become cyborgs. Half bionic, computer chips implanted within us, sensors. I wouldn't mind being half human/half bike.

Maybe a thousand years?
