How to fit.... mudguards and pannier rack with only one hole in the rear drop-outs.

Which one do you put on the inside?

Either:

A) Have the mudguards on the inside

pros; good fit, looks neat

cons; rack has to be 'opened' further. 135mm OLN plus thick alu drops means this can be a prob., weight further away from pivot could mean bolt failure and/or coming loose.

 Mudguards on outside

pros; opposite to cons above

cons; have to bend mudguards stays a lot to make them fit, looks less tidy.

So, what do other people do?

Whichever way round you do it, be sure to make some rubber washers from an old inner tube to put between frame, pannier fitting and mudguard fitting.

I went for C)

I made a short piece of 2mm alloy plate with 2 holes in it (think 2 hole meccano plate) which is sandwiched between rack/frame and then the free end has the mudguard stays bolted to it.

that's sounds like a brilliant idea - I'll keep my eyes open for a nice small piece of metal with 2 holes in it.

Can you get the mudguard on the outside of a rack?

yes, the stay attachment; not the actual mudguard!
