My feeling is that you need a nice scene that's worth a photo on its own. Sometimes this can be improved by putting a bike into it.
Then, afterwards, you always spot something annoying. This year, I took some pictures of a bike I'd just finished restoring. The bike was polished, and I spent a long time finding the right background, the right light and so on. Then, a while later, when I looked at the picture the only thing that jumped out at me was that while I was faffing around a bird had crapped on the front tyre.
