Registering for the London Etape this morning...the woman looked me up & down and said: 'Short?' Bloody cheek! Why just assume I'm not doing the medium or the long, just because I look like a decrepit old fart?










She was right of course, but that's not the point.

It's like when they ask you whether you want to keep the hanger that the thing was hanging off on the rack. Do I look like the kind of person who needs a tacky plastic hanger? ''Yes, please.'' I answer.

On more than one occasion I've responded with a grin, 'Do I look like I drink Diet Coke?'
