Dismal. Neither the road bike nor the hybrid moved and the pedelec hasn't moved since late August on a shopping or commuting ride. Factors being a dodgy knee, stupid weather and a water infection. Hopefully 2026 will see the 2024 A to Z pub name challenge completed belatedly; Exhibition (York), Yorkshire Hussar (Markington) and
Zoo (Northallerton).

You could do the Zoological in Hull which would be more of challenge especially as you would probably have to walk home after your bike got knicked.😉

First full year of retirement and, as expected, the total mileage is down on previous years due to the loss of commuting mileage. On the bright side, I've only gone out when I wanted to, not when I had to and it's been much more enjoyable.
As usual I kept track via a spreadsheet...

Anyway, today is the last day to increase the 2025 total.
I'm definitely planning on a ride not to increase my yearly amount but I've not ridden for a couple of days and it's dry. Forecast is grim for foreseeable so I highly recommend making most of today.

Not a bad year for cycling, apart from local rides with OH and friends, did the Etape Loch Ness and the Ride to the Sun, Alps to Ocean in NZ and the Rebellion Way in Norfolk. Lurgy in the summer had me off the bike for 6 weeks and then a few weeks recovery to get fitness back.
Short ride today should make it 4000 miles for the year.

So to follow my earlier post now that my year of cycling is officially over, it's definitely been a good one, though I've not been as far afield as previous years I've still had some days out. So here's my total leisure Kilometers for this year.

I sometimes feel I should hand my cyclechat card in 🫣
Not a whole lot of cycling in 2025.
An epic cycle-camp bimble around Barnstaple, but for the rest: odd days here & there.
One mighty fine day out on the IOW….some rides with pals around home.

Reasons?
Too busy on other stuff….half the year spent away from home doing other stuff. Pickleball taking off 🙏
Plus walking: 6 tough days on the Camino meant that possible cycle days were spent on ‘training walks’ instead 💪
Not sure 2026 will be much different 👀
But all exercise is good, I guess 🤷‍♂️
Keep the legs spinning!

Just looked at my Strava data for the Year; as we’re on New Years Eve day:

IMG_4825.jpeg

That’s 1525 miles on foot with my 🐶
And 1350 on ‘cycling’ (No BMX included)

I’d like to tentatively aim for 2000 miles 🤷‍♂️ ‘Cycling’ in 2026. Mainly because I’ve enjoyed every single mile I’ve done in 2025. However; part of that is because if I’ve remotely not fancied a ride - I just simply didn’t. Nothing was forced ‘just because’. And because I have so many other things I enjoy - cycling is still so appealing when I do. Upping the target means I need to be careful of over-indulging / feeling pressured into riding - and continue to make each and every mile in the saddle special…..

An excellent year for me: drive/cycle commuted consistently once or twice a week throughout the year (~11miles on the bike per journey), and achieved my first Metric Century on a day ride. All that (plus various smaller leisure rides) added up to a record total distance for the year of 1895mi / 3050km. To try to maintain this in 2026, I've signed up to a couple of CC challenges for the first time. Fingers crossed!

Bit of an odd year for me - I've been on Rouvy for around 5000km, and only somewhere in the region of 1500km outside, and probably 50% of that is km abroad.

I've had the good fortune to be able to cycle in Spain twice, and also Tuscany later in the summer, and Spain will be repeated next year, and possibly Tuscany too.

I've absolutely LOVED those experiences, the warm weather, the roads / climbs, and the almost entirely patient and understanding motorists.

The downside of those experiences, is that when I come back here, I am much less inclined to feel the motivation to go out on the bike
Has anyone else felt this, and if so, I'd be interested to here what you did about it.
I suspect this is just a me thing though.

I think I need to get out with my club more (Loads of people there that I do enjoy riding with) and maybe look to planning some trips further away, by putting the bike in the van, and driving to the start.
