Not a bad year for me.

Most miles ever at 10,086 (55% outdoors) which included doing the Rapha 500 for the first time ever - even if it was all on the turbo.

A great week in Calpe in March : 2 days riding the Gospel Pass and around the Elan Valley with my older brother

Some good races but not the results I wanted, which led to binning the end of my race season

My wife getting back into cycling and riding with her was great

And seeing my 3 year old grandson love the bike we bought for him and take to it like a pro.

I've had the good fortune to be able to cycle in Spain twice, and also Tuscany later in the summer.

I've absolutely LOVED those experiences, the warm weather, the roads / climbs…

The downside of those experiences, is that when I come back here, I am much less inclined to feel the motivation to go out on the bike.

Has anyone else felt this ?

Not with Cycling. I do limited miles compared to most. And only ever at the times / weather conditions of my choice.

But: I spent 10+ years chasing the Sun across the Globe - competing in another sport.

So when that competitive run started coming to an end - and after participating at the best venues, and at the best times - coming back and ‘giving it a go’ for fun in the damp and dreary UK never held quite the same appeal. Probably / especially as some of my friends had given up / moved on etc.

I’ve now not done any of that sport for 4 (?) years. And once it meant everything to me. Never say never - but where, when and with whom are more important than the what imo; as you get older…….

Good luck 🙏

Total distance was a dismal 1361 miles as illness in the family increasingly robbed me of leisure time. Work wasn't bad, but was quite intense.

But I squeezed in a few fantastic rides: London Lockdown, Kennet Valley 200 and my first 400 (LWL).

Not sure what 2026 will bring, but i fancy trying a 600 in May, if I can regain my fitness.

Anyone else contemplating a specific cycling goal today to end the year on?

I've not looked at goals like this for over three years, but I'm 1hr21mins away from 290 hours for the year, seems achievable given I've done about that duration on Monday and Tuesday.

Can't see any of it happening outside though, think I've only ridden outside once in December, as much as there's the romantic notion of finishing the year outdoors it's only 2C now and the fog has unusually only cleared in the last hour or so... Plus sunset is only ~40mins away!

2,693 miles, including 13 metric and 4 imperial centuries. My second highest total in the last 5 years ^_^

Also got into the madness of collecting squares on veloviewer - pushing / carrying a road bike along muddy footpaths and bridleways, "private" roads, straying into places i wouldn't normally - all of Coventry  Up to a 34 x 34 maximum square, aiming for 45 x 45 next year, once the weather picks up a bit.

It's been a very good year for me, and at 11304 miles I have beaten my previous annual best mileage by nearly 1700, and it's quite possible that I will never do this much again.
This is all down to the LEL (London-Edinburgh-London) this summer. Even though it was curtailed due to bad weather I still managed about 580 miles on the four days that I rode, and I did loads of long-distance training in the months leading up to it that really increased my mileage. Then after the event in August I was still feeling very fit and have kept up a lot of the longer rides. Having discovered how much I enjoy them I'm now hoping to carry on with these sort of rides into 2026 and beyond, though in my mid-60s there's always this nagging fear of slowing down, and I guess this is part of my motivation for keeping going at this intensity while I can.

A map of (most of) my rides in 2025. There were a few others, in Northern Scotland, Spain and the eastern USA which don't fit well on the map.
