Hows your 2018 going...!

Well you've probably realised by the title mine so far is proving to be rubbish and here is why.
Some 12 weeks ago now I managed to break my wrist and it kept me off of the bike for 10 weeks which was purgatory. So once healed I thought great back out on the bike but no because it seems the hiatus hernia accompanied with acid reflux has now resulted in me having a stomach bleed which has given me anaemia so yet again I cannot use my bike because even cycling a short distance knackers me.
After an investigation they've also discovered I have diverticulitis in my colon so that too clearly may affect my future cycling. Anyone got this and still manages to cycle.
To accompany all of this my younger cousin 58 an always happy fella has had a stroke and our aunty has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
On a more minor scale our car has had to have a new clutch fitted so all in all not a good start to 2018.
What about you ! Won the Lottery or has your year started like mine !

Mostly not good:

- Fell over on ice in early January, meaning a month on crutches as I landed on my operation site
- As I was getting back into things I caught a virus from my son, which I'm still recovering from and struggling to ride any distance

On the upside I did manage a 200km audax on Sunday, which counts as a pre-qualifier for next year's PBP. And I'm slowly getting better from my operation 9 months ago.

It was going great until the Sunday before last. I'm another one with a virus. Headaches like I've never experienced before and hot and cold flushes like I could never imagine!

Not fab here. Cycling more, but still got spinal pain, so looking to go onto happy pills/pain relief after I see my doc - hoping to get something like Amitriptyline or similar that can help with pain, sleep and mood. The claim is dragging on - specialist is taking an age to finalise a report from my last seeing him in January. Hopefully, once received, we can get this process complete and dusted off.

The whole process is stressful.

I’m having a pretty good time so far, got involved in much more social cycling and reaped the associated rewards. But there’s still some dickheads trying to drag me down that taints it.....

pretty good, promised the wife a complete refurb of the house, new kitchen, laundry room, downstairs, redecorate everything, and all new furniture, carpets flooring and new suite, new dining room set, new kitchen floor, all new lighting, everything downstairs was thrown out. So new kitchen, carpets, flooring, furniture, redecorated it, did about 90% myself over every weekend, then took 3 weeks of work to do the major stuff.

Started in Feb and finished it all at end of May, last year I did the upstairs, and the year before the garden.

I come home from work and there is nothing to do except sit on the settee, drink beer and watch TV!

It all looks bloody lovely too!

Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
Sorry to learn of your health @hondated . GWS.

My year has been up and down. The stroke last Oct is still causing issues with fatigue and dizziness. For a while there I thought I was improving but lately it's gone worse again.
37 years with type 1 diabetes and I'm still having trouble keeping the glucose stable and at reasonable levels. HBa1c levels for your average joe are supposed to be around 5-7. Mine at the last check were 12  and have been at that level for years. The doc has referred me to a kidney specialist due to their condition.
On the plus side, my girls are doing REALLY well in school and are dead happy living with me and over the last couple months I've pretty much built a whole new bike which is super mega fabtastic! And to top it off, the UK had some sunshine!

Not the best year ever, but I am so old I cannot remember the best year anyway. I have written about breaking my clavicle, and a few later details, on other threads, and there is a little more to tell. And some pictures of the bike.

On June 7th I had the first proper look at the bike. It has been living on the balcony, with the wheels out ‘cos there is no place else to keep it really. The garage is secure, but communal. With the wheels out it really looks like a pile of junk which might just be cleared away . . .

So, what damage? Very little really. The front tyre has some sidewall damage, and will be replaced. Both wheels still run pretty true, and are in line with each other and the frame. No damage to the frame that I can see and I have looked very closely and carefully, which does not mean I have seen everything of course. Brakes and gearshifts work, upside down on the floor. On the road may be different. Bar tape scuffed on the right hand side, and so is the saddle. Trivial stuff.

Tyres seem to be hard to come by here. There are tyres, but not a great deal of choice in the local shops. Anything by Schwalbe, nope. Scratching around online and I found Wiggle’s US site, the prices were in dollars so I guessed it. Spend $138 and have free shipping to Brazil. OK they are quoting about three weeks delivery, but my collarbone will take longer than that so an order is being put together. Tyres, tubes, pedals, rim tapes and I think a Brooks so I have the same saddles on two continents. And three bikes. Sounds good to me. Then I tried to make the order and my card refuses to play. I suspect it is the bank, who I will not name because they have recently upgraded their internet banking to include Brazil, where I have been since March. Maybe the credit card will work now.

Anyway, the vet said about 10th July before I can remove the sling, which I am looking forward to, and fingers crossed there is increasing mobility in the crunched bit, which pleases me lots and has allowed me to play guitar again. Not that I play any better for the rest, mind you.

Mostly positive for me, I still suffer bouts of depression and loneliness but generally I am happier than I ever have been. My new job which I started early last year is so much less stressful than the last one and and moving to a new flat means I can walk to work in 15 minutes which is a huge bonus. I'm about three stone lighter than I was 18 months ago and have radically over-hauled my diet means I feel fitter than I ever have done. All being well, this weekend will see me complete cycling the entire west coast of Ireland which seemed a far off dream and impossible task when I first decided I'd like to do it.

The big downer this year was my father ending up in intensive care following a serious case of pneumonia last month (he has always struggled with chest problems but this was worse than anything before) and also his kidneys had stopped working but he seems to have defied the doctors who didn't rate his chances and is back home again and apparently getting better every day and out and about again despite the lung specialist saying he'd have only 30% lung function.

Well, the last 6 months have been quite dull for varying reasons , but still alive and kicking, lots of problems but nowt I cannot jump over, nowhere near enough riding now the weather is good.
Alive and kicking, there’s a lot to be said for that, over the last 12 months I have , mainly through work met people who’s lives have devasted by chronic and terminal illness , which in turn affects spouses , relatives next of kin etc of these persons have also had their lives turned inside out ,
Really bad strokes, Alzheimer’s, cancer .............,
So , in my world all is ok,
