HTC Desire and FROYO (Android 2.2)

I have been waiting expectantly for the update for the Android 2.2 O\S update, mainly because of the ability to turn your phone into a wifi hotspot, although touted speed increases and increased battery life will be a plus if they are real.

The upgrade started to be available for some users around the world last week, but Virgin have been a bit tardy, so I took it upon myself to do it manually (which was trial to work out tbh).

Has anyone else got it on their Desire yet?

Bothered?

I know the routine now, so if anyone needs a hand check out updating Desire Firmware and\or gimme a shout.

Orange users need not apply just yet apparently.

If you are in no rush, then the major phone companies will put an update out directly to your phone over the next couple of weeks.

I'm on O2 and as I recall they have a habit of dragging their feet on such things - I had to debrand my old Nokia N82 to get a FW update so it would be at least STABLE which was very frustrating. When I got a replacement for it after it broke, it turned out O2 hadn't bothered taking on a FW update since! It was still on the year+ old firmware! FFS.

SO ... how risky is manually updating it yourself? It take it it's more a case of just don't pull that USB cable out or get struck by lightning when it's updating itself and you'll be fine?

I've always installed custom ROMs, so have had FroYo for a while.
I highly recommend Modaco, if you're a bit geeky like me.

Indeed, nothing more complex really than plug phone in via usb, run program and let the phone reboot... a minor bit of copying a block of hex to your sdcard, rebooting and then running another program...reboot and job done.

The difficulty for me was finding the right ruu file. Took me 2hours of googling in the end, but the actual process took 10-15 minutes once I had everything I needed.

The instruction and thread that I linked to were really helpful and straight forward.

I ignored the Modaco stuff because I wanted a bog standard Froyo setup, rather than a custom or rooted rom.

One advantage of the Apple approach is that it stops the network providers screwing around with the firmware.

Unfortunately, it also stops EVERYONE screwing around with the firmware

You could always use the generic image like me, the only operator that it appears not to work for is Orange, due to something to do with the radio software apparently.

It should only be a very short time until everyone gets it anyway, over the air. I didn't wan't to wait a week or two for Virgin to do it though.

It's a two edged sword. A stable environment is good for add-on developers and at some point we may well see Android Apps that are brand-dependent which would be a real pain.

We've been here before in the PC arena where many VARs in the mid-1980s were rolling out systems with their own TSRs that stopped people running other off the shelf applications.

(Most of the people who screw around with the firmware end up screwing the firmware ;) )

Reading that guide again it appears to describe how to do a clean install, clearing everything off in the process. ANyone know of any guides that explain how to just upgrade?

No, sorry, never looked into that but wish I had as all my settings have been a royal pain to put back since.

Safest will be to wait for telco to issue the update. Won't be long.

As for apps2SD, so far with my playing about a large percentage (but not all) do put themselves on the SD with 2.2. This will only improve as the app authors tweak their code.
