I might be tempted, what pub stops are planned?

Hmm. I might be interested in joining. Last time I went to spurn was over 10 years ago. Being from over the water in deepest, darkest Lincolnshire, it would be too far to realistically ride the whole way, so I would have to drive to Beverley. What is the parking like there?

I'd be interested in joining the ride too - although thanks to the wonderful way our railways work, the soonest I could get to Beverley on a Saturday would be 9am (on a Sunday it would be 11!), so it might be a case of train to Hull and meet up somewhere en route...anyone recommend a cafe?

It's a really nice ride. Once 30 mins past Hull it's like entering a world that it time forgot, Wicker Man territory, same as on the oppo west coast, Allenby, Wigton etc
Spurn point is great, all those washed up dead cats and dogs with bloated bellies.
do you mean allonby?
Please tell us more.
sounds fascinating.

The road to Spurn Point was washed away in a storm in February. There's a stretch of a couple of hundred yards where the tarmac has gone and you're on sand. At high tide the point is an island.

Yes they just drop off the tarmac onto sand. You need a 4x4 if you take to the beach.

@EasyPeez is the man with local knowledge.

We are thinking of venturing in this direction in September.

He reckons the area is generally dull and featureless, but I'm still keen to have a go having never been there.

Just to be clear, I was referring to the surrounding Holderness area, specifically in terms of how varied/interesting a ride you can plot. I wouldn't refer to Spurn Point as dull and featureless - it's both beautiful and eerie at the same time and a great place for watching the annual bird migrations.

Used to fly my planes on Beverly Westwood . Is it still woods and open fields?

Shaun

Yes, and is still also distinctive for its roaming cattle, open access golf course and magic mushrooms. Combining the 3 is not recommended.

How do the cars get down then? do they drive down on the sand?

Cars are no longer allowed. You have to park up at Easington Road, to the north of the spit. The only vehicles that go down are 4x4s to access the lifeboat houses and big YWT offroad safari affairs that you can pay to have a ride in.

what pub stops are planned?
I love a good pub but they're few and far between in Holderness, unfortunately. I'll be doing a recce ride at some point so will poke my head in a few as part of that and report back, martyr that I am...

What is the parking like there?
It's all meter parking in the centre of Beverley, but there is a long stay car park off School Lane which you shouldn't have too much trouble getting a space in, or there are plenty of unrestricted residential streets round about if you don't mind not being right in the centre. People park on the edge of the Westwood too.

There's a stretch of a couple of hundred yards
I thought it was quite a bit longer than that - more like half a mile - but maybe my memory is playing tricks on me. You could ride it on a fat bike, anything else would need pushing or carrying.

Could be interesting, I've wanted to visit the fort place near Hull as it's got the last complete Blackburn Beverley in it.

Please do, it's not possible for me to ride 2 hours without visiting a pub for fuel, tbh "good" doesn't matter.............

Last time I went to Spurn I stopped at Kilnsea and turned around as there was no access, this was 2 summers ago though. A few times I go up that way but I turn around at Easington.

The route I take to and/or from Spurn direction goes through Paull and past Fort Paull. This is the route through Patrington Haven and Sunk Island, which is as mentioned above, incredibly dull and featureless. Close your eyes, cycle for 20 minutes, open them, you could be mistaken for thinking you haven't moved. Yet strangely I go that route over and over again and enjoy it!

As @BrynCP says, a route to take in Fort Paull and Spurn is easily doable - the two are about 2hrs apart by bike.

This would be your view for most of that 2hrs:

With people to chat to and fair weather it could be rather enjoyable, especially with the Fort and Spurn as destinations at either end.

I think regularly cycling it alone, into headwinds, would tip me over the edge into insanity.

Im originally from Withernsea but have not been back for a while. I have done a route from The Deep in Hull to Spurn. You can get out of Hull using the old Withernsea to Hull railway line. Far better than the A1033. I am very familiar with the back road to Withernsea and its a nice road to ride a bike on.

Halsham Arms used to be good for food as was the Station Hotel and Hildyard Arms at Patrington. Crown and Anchor at Kilsea is right on the mud flats.
Dont thing the Station Hotel is too posh. Its not. Its ran by Alistair, an old friend.

Thanks for the pub tips, I'll be sure to try some/all of those pubs when I next head out that way. The Plough Inn at Hollym has won several Camra awards in recent years and has the look of a potential hidden gem, but it's been shut every time I've called by in the daytime. Station Hotel was clean and did a nice pint and baguette when I used to work out that way, Hildyard was pretty down at heel. That's going back 6 or 7 years now though.

The route you've suggested would indeed be a very nice ride, but I'm not sure I'd fancy taking on the old railway line on my road bike, or advise anyone else to; it's pretty rough. Gives me an idea though - I might try a road route out via Sunk Island and Welwick and then try your route on my CX with fatter tyres, to compare and contrast.

It's a shame that you can't follow the old line all the way out to Withernsea, in the way that you can with the old Hornsea line. It would be great if they'd open up the whole route again (and ideally tarmac/cinder it).
