A friend carried my bike on his bike rack last week and the rack has scratched the bike's downtube enough so that bare metal is showing. I was thinking of getting one of those small tins of Humbrol model paint (White) in most likely a gloss, or even White Enamel Radiator Gloss.

The question is, will it work or is automotive paint or a touch up pen a better solution?

Any enamel paint will do. However, you will quickly discover that there is no such colour as white. It comes in so many shades that you will almost certianly see a difference. You will also not get the new paint to settle on the same level as the other paint and it will be either too high or too low.
Live with it.

Agreed! Olympic White, Arctic White, White, Semi Ivory, Pearl White.

I'll just have to pick one at random. I just want to do my best to seal the scratch and keep the elements out to prevent chipping and blistering.

what you needs is the RAL no of the paint they used in the factory . then laugh when you have no idea where you will get it made.

live with it , or make it a feature and paint a bigger blob and put legs on it to look like a spider.

I don't think Humbrol does gloss white. Best advice for white frames is to buy 'appliance white' from halfords, which they sell for washing machines etc.

what RAL number would that be ? I have 2 white appliances next to each other from the same manufacturer and the same year of make . both different tones/hues/shades of white .

I'll try that then. Humbrol do in fact do a White Gloss. No: 2 in their range.

That may not be a bad idea, you can also get a 'Bath enamel repair paint' from plumbers merchants, the one i've used comes with two bottles so you can match the tint, also if you level the repair area it will settle but you may still need two coats. you had to really look hard to notice the bath repair i made.

I've opened a can of worms. Ha!

I will probably try that Halford's stuff or Radiator/Bath enamel. Revell also do enamel based model paints. I think they are a subsidiary of Humbrol.

Revell aren't anything to do with Hornby, who have at least one Gloss White in their Rail Match range.
The matt white with a clear varnish would also cover things.
You have plasticote to consider as well.

You want to open a can of worms, ask for either a grey or a green.

Looks vaguely pearlescent in that photo, visit to Halfords for some touch up and Tesco for some toothpicks to use as they are better than a brush
