Hydrogen is free and easy to produce in the sort of volumes required. It just needs a small wind turbine and some electrolysis.

Hydrogen is merely a way of transporting power not a power source. Surely it's a lot easier/cheaper/greener to transport power down a copper wire?

It is complicated. Hydrogen provides a way to transport and store. You can only transport down a copper wire, and then you need a battery to store. Hydrogen storage is much cheaper and environmentally friendly than batteries.

Hydrogen fuel cells do have a very high energy density mind 40,000 Wh per KG compared to Lithium Ion which can achieve about 260 Wh per KG. Just think of the range capabilities
