A bit of quality heli tape on the crank arm if you're that concerned.

I dont like actual damage, but genuine wear from honest use is simply patina and doesnt worry me,

I’m OCD. I don’t apologise. It’s my DNA. It has its benefits (My Boss loves me - I let nothing go with my inbuilt quality control. And not much gets past me). On other occasions it’s likely tiresome to some.

My niece is like that. She would probably clean stuff that I have already cleaned!

Anyone got any thoughts / experiences on this at all ?

Firstly: that's not overly close and I doubt you're going to suffer any rubbing at the front unless the shoes fail in some quite profound manner.
Secondly: you could move the cleats in towards the crank as far as possible, if they're not already.
Thirdly: Ultegra pedals are available with a 4mm longer axle, so you could use a pair of those (often heavily discounted) if you really are worried.

The point above about Q factor is certainly pertinent though. 4mm x 2 is probably OK, but it might not be, so be aware of anything feeling 'wrong' after you increase it, by whichever means (spacers, Ultegra pedals, cleat movement).

Not a help, but in all my years of riding clipless starting with the 1st Look pedals to riding MTB SPDs on all my bikes, I have never had crank rub,
I have just got a friends sons old bike, he never used clipless just flats, not only were both crank arms worn but the chain stays were also worn from his heels rubbing !

Fair point ! I’ve been on flats on all bikes I own for the last two years since I got back into cycling. No issues (With rubbing on cranks or chain stays) thus far. But never say never……

Hmmmm. A bit miffed 🙁

*Stuck my SPD-SL cleats on the Mavic shoes I was kindly given - this afternoon (My first ever clipless pedals) - to get a feel for what’s going on. Messed around with cleat tension / how the foot is released etc.

And then noticed how darned close my shoe is to the crank arm. [Approx 6mm max I reckon]. At this point shoes are as new / have done very little work / so are not stretched at all. And when pictured there’s no foot or weight in them of course. So that small gap is only going to decrease. I’ll be at risk of rubbing with every revolution……

It’s hardly surprising in retrospect of course. I didn’t pick out when purchasing - how darned short the spindle is on these Shimano 105 pedals.

Just had a half-hour look on the net. And I can’t find too many pedals with clearly longer spindles. Apart from some of the Chinese Brands (Which doesn’t hugely worry me - as I’m sure I have the same [Bearings not bushes] brand on my Carrera and they’ve done 2000+ miles…and run as good as new).

I'm unsure of the integrity of spacers..... The amount of metal between the blind hole where the pedal fits and the screw thread that fits into the crank may be minimal, with a large bending moment!

They're not a special, no. They're a standard offering, but I believe Shimano only do them in the Ultegra level pedal.

Here's an example of online stock. I've seen them down to low nineties sometimes, but this price is common.

I found some Aluminium items in the spares box yesterday. I did dry fit 2 on one side. Was undecided on the result…..

Seven a bike is tool designed for riding. Yes you want to keep it nice but at the end it’s for riding and given how much seemingly pointless stuff you buy for yours. I suspect if yours got too tatty you could just buy another.
You can’t take it with you.😏
If I remember I will post a picture of my shoes in my pedals. This will take some time as I will have to clean/ polish them to meet Severn’s standards.😂
